An introduction to Data Science/Artificial Intelligence for UoW staff

Register for the event

The Artificial Intelligence Institute will be running a course of four sessions over two days where participants will gain a basic business and technical understanding of Data Science, Big Data and AI and the opportunities and risks that need to be carefully navigated along the way. Attendees will be able to register for each session independently.

The University of Waikato is recognised internationally for its long history in machine learning research and its application across industry sectors, including publishing research in leading journals, presenting at conferences and developing widely-used open-source software systems such as WEKA, MOA and ADAMS. The University of Waikato is also renowned for producing world-leading techonologists.

Machine learning serves an important role in artificial intelligence (AI) by giving software the ability to learn from observations, enabling it to adapt its behaviour, provide predictions, and give users insight into observed data. At the University of Waikato our researchers are focused on real-time analytics for big data, deep learning and making deployable machine learning technology available to everyone so that New Zealand may benefit from the age of artificial intelligence.

Leveraging our existing strength in this field the University of Waikato has launched a new Artificial Intelligence Institute and as part of this we are wanting to provide the opportunity for our own staff to become familiar with the technology and its potential.

We will set the scene with an introduction to AI and data science then move into deep learning, clustering and the nitty gritty of how to build AI projects. We will also unpack some of the big social issues around ethics, privacy, fake news and what the future holds.

Spaces are limited. Morning and afternoon tea will be provided.
